This was the very last photo I took of my sister-in-law Jacqueline on her and my brother’s wedding day. It was at the end of the reception and was very cold outside. My son Christian had just minutes before helped me set up and test the flash exposure and light position. While I scouted for the best position for a background, Chris set up the lighting. He placed a Sunpak 433D flash unit inside a folding 30″ umbrella box, mounted on a light stand. The trigger was wireless, so he made sure that the connected slave trigger was set to fire the flash. We were using my “cheapy” Cactus Triggers, which made me nervous that they were not going to fire in the cold temp (but they performed fine).

I found the full moon to be an added bonus, so I decided on an open background. There were many trees and power poles in the distance, but since I was using a zoom lens I could compress the depth of field and make the background appear much closer if needed. I fired off a few shots of Chris to test the exposure and we seemed pretty set with what we had going. So all we had left to do was convince the new bride to venture out in the freezing cold for a few minutes and take the shots.

What I really liked about taking this photo is the fact that we were standing in a near empty parking lot behind the party house. There really was no “scenery” other than trees, light poles, power lines and a garbage dumpster. When I brought Jackie and my brother Ken out to where we were going to shoot, they must have thought I was nuts (that is subject for debate). There was no glamorous background- all they saw was just a dark, plain, icy cold parking lot. But what they could not see was my vision. What I saw was a beautiful soft lit portrait of the bride in her white dress, complimented by the white snow and full moon in the clear sky. I was shooting toward my vision- and the end result came fairly close to what I was seeing in my mind. We took a few shots of her and a few with my brother, the best man and even my niece and her husband as they left the reception. Then we were done. Total shoot time between setup, testing and finish: 23 minutes. My fingers were freezing and my camera batteries did not like me very much- but I am happy I pushed myself to shoot this, it was a great learning experience. Kudos to my sister-in-law for braving the elements and walking across an icy parking lot in her heels (Welcome to the family!). Extra thanks to my son Chris (below right) for setting up the equipment and standing in for test shots…I could not have pulled this off without your help, you are a great assistant!

In Camera Exposure: 1/60 sec @ f5.6, ISO 100. Light source: Sunpak 433D flash at ½ power, inside a 30″ soft box umbrella. It was set to high on camera left and aiming down at a 45 degree angle. Since I shoot RAW format, I usually do not worry about white balance. However because of all the snow, to be safe I took a custom WB based off the dress.

Post Process: My friends know that I am not much of a “photoshop guy”. I usually try to get everything right in camera. However, I did not have the time factor while shooting this to drill down the exposure and settings like I normally would do. So I re-touched the final RAW image using GIMP. First, the potential problem with this image is all of the white in the snow could really play havoc with the detail in the dress. Using UFRaw I double checked that the white balance was set right, and for the most part it I was right on exposing for the dress. Second, the original orientation was shot in a vertical portrait format. By using the liquid rescale tool, I was able to expand the background while preserving both the bride and the moon so neither was distorted. Third, I cleaned up some noise and performed an overall sharpening. I then cropped the image to a landscape orientation and exported as a jpg.
